Why Mindfulness?

November 7, 2016 by Wendy Bryan 2 Comments

Why Mindfulness over other forms of Meditation?

I’ve been practicing Meditation, mostly on a daily basis, since the late 1970’s. I learnt firstly at an Adult Education Centre then followed up over several years with courses run by Psychologists, Yoga Teachers and I even spent time going to various Ashrams seeking all I could learn about Meditation and I went to Church and used prayer as a form of Meditation. In the 90’s after many years of study and rigorous practice, I became a Tai Chi Instructor and loved this form of movement meditation.

But a few years ago I decided to do an actual Mindfulness Meditation course as in all my years of meditating, I didn’t fully understand the difference and after reading about Mindfulness quite a bit, I found myself wanting to know more.

Well, what a pleasant surprise! Not only did I find Mindfulness much simpler and easier to practice compared to my usual meditation practice, but I’ve found the benefits have surpassed all other meditations I’ve experienced – by far.

Even though the meditations I’ve been practicing for over 35 years have similarities to Mindfulness, the differences in how my life and my health have changed are quite profound.

Mindfulness is so simple to put into practice but, here lies the ‘secret’. It does take regular practice in order to feel the benefits and change unwanted patterns in the brain. However, it’s such a gentle, beautiful practice that after a short time, you’ll honestly look forward to it every day.

And guess what, Every Day Gets Better!

Thanks Wendy for sharing your story about meditation and mindfulness. I have found mindfulness to be the simplest and most effective way of bringing stillness to my thoughts. Mindfulness has enabled me to observe my thoughts and feelings without being carried away be them. For the first time in my life, I have been able to allow feelings of old hurt, anger and trauma to rise to the surface in order to acknowledge and let them go. I have been able to separate who I am from passing thoughts and emotions. This has been the biggest relief to me and allowed me to experience joy in my life again. I look forward to hearing more about your story.

That’s so good to read Emily. Thanks so much for sharing the wonderful benefits you’ve found with Mindfulness. It’s inspiring for others who may not have tried using mindfulness and meditation. It’s so simple yet so powerful, but like anything worthwhile, takes practice. It’s a joy to welcome you to my blog and I thank you for your valuable contribution. ❤️
